A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these drugs must be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
