No fewer than 13 passengers perish and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
